I'm so glad you found me! I'm a San Francisco photographer, and this blog charts my journey in the ever-evolving world of photography. One of the things I love about photography is that it's a journey, not a destination. I'm constantly learning and meeting wonderful people. Fisheye

I have this cheap fisheye lens that I can screw onto my kit lens, and I wondered recently why I never used it. So I decided it must be experienced!

And I realized why I never use it, it's terrible. The image is completely soft anywhere but the center, and the chromatic aberrations have to be seen to be believed (I worked really hard in Lightroom to get rid of them here). All reasons I can't wait to get rid of it and potentially pick up the Lensbaby fisheye optic, hoping that it performs a little better.

Still, there's something to be said for even a failed experiment. And I do like the experience of shooting with a fisheye, even if coming home and reviewing the images from this one was a bit of a letdown. As I recall, I paid less than $40 for it, so I really can't complain.

  1. Fisheye lenses can be fun, I used to have one for my RB67 that cost me almost $1000 but it was great. I used it mostly for macro stuff. I'll bet you were almost touching that branch in the middle of your photo. Like you say, not too bad for a $40 attachment and it is fun to experiment with different things.

    Keep up the good work!

  2. Hey, for 40 bucks, this isn't too bad...the softness in the image gives it a fantasy or dreamlike quality....I really don't think it is terrible! Funny, when you get used to the sharp focus you always get, the soft look looks bad in your eyes, but not in others...just another form of art!

  3. I love my Fisheye lens! But.... It is not a circular fisheye (the one for Lensbaby is circular, too). I had one and just couldn't work with it. You can do so much great images with frame-filling fisheye, just look at this image here: http://www.korwelphotography.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/2009sum-113.jpg

  5. I'm back with another comment but this one isn't about the fish eye lens it's about you.
Congratulations – You’ve been tagged! That means you’re it. I got tagged by Stephen Baird the Nikon Sniper, so I answered all his questions and passed it on to you. This really can be some fun if you’ll play along. There are just a few questions to answer and you can see them - along with my answers -

  6. Jessica! I see what you mean. The problem still isn't taken care of. This should have been a great shot with its composition, color and context. Hope you get your lens problem straightened out.
