I'm so glad you found me! I'm a San Francisco photographer, and this blog charts my journey in the ever-evolving world of photography. One of the things I love about photography is that it's a journey, not a destination. I'm constantly learning and meeting wonderful people. Please peruse the blog to your heart's content, then check out my website and feel free to contact me! (I love hearing from you.)

Stepping Out

I could have killed this guy when he stepped into my photo. But now I would give pretty much anything to have his foot in focus. This is why I try not to delete images on the back of my camera, because I'm so focused on the shot I'm envisioning that I can't see it when a better shot happens.

Anyway, please imagine this shot with the foot in focus, and the background less so. I kind of like it. What do you think?

  1. I kind of like the sharpness of the background, the reflections, definitely an interesting one

  2. Where is Sir Walter Raleigh, when you really need him?

  3. In my opinion, the foot makes the image...and so do the reflections in the water!

  4. I found my eye jumping back and forth between the word "stop" at the top because it is in focus and then back to the foot because it is there. Finally I focused more to the center where it is in focus and the foot just gave it balance. I think it may be better - artistically and compositionally - out of focus. It also gives a slight sense of motion.

  5. I love the concept, but not the focus.
I would love to see the leg in focus with just the right amount of bokeh so you can just make out the "STOP" in the background.
A tall order I'm sure because its not like the guy is modeling for you.

Also, I don't know if you did it on purpose or not, but the reflection of the stop light and the building off the street are great.

  6. The foot not in focus fits that fact that he is on the move, I also love the reflections you captured.

  9. Actualy, I like it better with the foot out of focus. To me, the glistening street with the word STOP at the top is the subject of the picture. The slightly blurred foot conveys a sense of motion and urgency.

  10. I like the implied motion of the leg out of focus, I love the green reflection the most.

  11. I think the foot definatly makes the picture and it doesn't bother me that it's not in focus. I like it as is.
