I'm so glad you found me! I'm a San Francisco photographer, and this blog charts my journey in the ever-evolving world of photography. One of the things I love about photography is that it's a journey, not a destination. I'm constantly learning and meeting wonderful people. Please peruse the blog to your heart's content, then check out my website and feel free to contact me! (I love hearing from you.)

Why It's Good to Have a Photography Partner

Taking pictures alone is ok. Most of the time it's the way I do it. And then some of the rest of the time I take pictures while other people are waiting for me, and that's a little bit stressful, both for them and for me. And if it's anyone but Evan, usually I don't do that much. Because I don't like to keep people waiting.

But having someone else with you who is also excited about the picture is great! And I didn't really understand how great until Miguel happened to me, and we went shooting together a few times. And then it wasn't only me saying , "Just a couple more, ok?" We were both doing it. Both distracted by that cool light on that building over there. Both had to stop to take a shot of the cool car in the alleyway. Both excited to go into the Hyatt and shoot the Christmas decorations there.

And when you're with a partner, it becomes a hobby, a passion, something you're interested in. Not (what I always fear people are thinking) this weird semi-voyeuristic aberration. You feel justified in taking the picture just because it might turn out to be cool. And then again, it might not. But who cares? The next one will be even cooler.

This shot, for example, I never would have seen. I wouldn't have been walking through a neighborhood I had no particular business in, camera in hand, just looking for cool light. And the reflection of these awesome clouds on this awesome building would have been completely lost to me.

Now Miguel has flown back to Colombia, and I'm on my own again. Anyone in the SF area want to go shooting together?

  1. Isn't it great to have someone to share your passion with...instead of a husband saying "I think you have got enough shots" lol

This is just an awesome image...the reflections are so clear and the perspective of the building is just so powerful! Absolutely Heavenly!

  2. Now I'm really jealous! I know exactly what you are saying, and I think every other photographer can relate. If you are with other people, they are not interested in waiting while you find the photo op and check out all angles, change your camera settings, set up your tripod, etc. You are lucky to have found a great photography buddy. I'm still waiting to find that person who lives near me!! And this is a great shot, makes me dizzy!!!

  3. Oh, Jessica - I'd love to come to San Francisco and be your photography partner. Your photos are awesome and I love seeing so much of the city I love. We live on the East Coast, but my husband and I make a trip to SF every year. It is also wonderful to have a photo partner. Sheila and I live very close to each other , met through this project and have become fast friends and photo buddies. It's wonderful to be able to spend a whole day in a butterfly farm with no one getting fidgety. ;-)

  4. It won't be as much fun as a constant partner, but when you need to bend over backwards to get a shot like this you could always ask a passer-by to hold you up so you don't fall. Pick a strong one! Great shot and angles.

  6. I love your photos and would be honored to have you as a shooting partner! My wife and I will be in SF the week of Dec 19 but I'm not sure I can break away from work... 8-(

I will break away from work sometime during our visit and will try to get half the quality shots that you show every day.
